Arrangements for Trump-Putin Meeting Postponed Shortly Following Budapest Negotiations Announced

There are "no plans" for American leader President Trump to meet Russia's Vladimir Putin "in the immediate future", a administration representative has declared.

Recently the US president said he and the Kremlin leader would conduct negotiations in Budapest soon to examine the war in Ukraine.

A planning session between US Secretary of State Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was planned for recently - but the administration clarified the two had had a "positive" discussion and that a face-to-face session was not "required".

The administration did not share any more details on why the talks had been put on hold.

Previous Developments

Trump had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting over the phone with Putin, a just prior to hosting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Some reports claimed his talks with Zelensky had been a "contentious discussion", with insiders indicating Trump had pushed him to give up large areas of Ukraine's east as part of a agreement with Russia.

Nevertheless, on this week the American president supported a truce plan backed by Ukraine and EU officials to halt the war on the present positions.

"Let it be cut the way it is," he remarked.

Russia has consistently objected against freezing the present battle positions.

Moscow was solely focused on "enduring stability", Lavrov commented on this week, suggesting that pausing conflict would merely represent a brief pause.

Diplomatic Positions

The "root causes" of the war needed to be addressed, the Russian diplomat emphasized, using Russian diplomatic language for a series of comprehensive conditions that involve the recognition of full Russian sovereignty over the Donbas as well as the demilitarisation of Ukraine – a unacceptable proposition for Ukraine and its Western allies.

The Ukrainian president commented talks regarding the battle positions were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Moscow was "doing everything" to prevent dialogue.

He further commented the sole subject that could cause Russia to "become engaged" was that of the supply of long-range weapons to the Ukrainian military.

Military Considerations

Putin's unplanned conversation with the US leader recently preceded reports that the United States was considering delivering distance-capable weapons to Ukrainian forces that could potentially strike Russian territory.

The Ukrainian leader asserted it was the missile discussion that had compelled Moscow to engage in discussion. The talk about the weapons systems had emerged as a "significant input" in negotiations", he added.
