Ben Stokes Takes Six Wickets in English Ashes Warm-up
Practice game, Lilac Hill (first day of 3)
Development squad 382: Jacks 84, McKinney 67; Stokes 6-52
England XI: still to bat
Ben Stokes delivered 6 scalps in his return to play since July but the tourists encountered an injury concern involving fast bowler Wood on the opening day of their Test preparation against England Lions in Western Australia.
Skipper's Impressive Comeback
Stokes, returning after nearly four months away with a shoulder injury, bowled sixteen overs across three spells for his 6-52 against England Lions – each to catches taken on the on-side.
Mark Wood's Fitness Worry
Fast bowler Mark Wood, himself returning after nine months away with a knee problem, delivered a scheduled amount of eight overs before departing the field in the post-lunch session because of a hamstring problem. He will undergo scanning on the following day.
The Wood situation removed the intensity out of the day, as the Lions were dismissed for three hundred eighty-two on a sluggish pitch after an automatic toss at the venue.
Team Strategy
The tourists wanted to bowl first to accumulate bowling time before the initial Test match at Optus Stadium, starting on November 21st.
In a potential indication towards their first-Test plans, the visiting team fielded an fast bowling lineup – four specialist bowlers plus Stokes – and omitted spin bowler Bashir in the development squad.
Batting Standouts
Jacob Bethell failed to press his claim for inclusion in the Test team, making just two runs, but Will Jacks enhanced his credentials to be selected later in the tour by hitting eighty-four.
McKinney, Jordan Cox, teenage Rew and Matthew Potts also made half-centuries.
Low-key Atmosphere
The team's decision to play a single warm-up game against the development squad has been questioned by some ex-players but the captain hit back by labeling the doubters "past players".
A low-pressure first day in front of a small crowd of spectators at Lilac Hill was definitely a world away from what the team will encounter at a packed Optus Stadium next week.
Captain's Excellent Performance
The captain was superb in the series against the Indian team in the home summer, only to push himself to breaking point. He missed the last match with a shoulder tear.
The skipper has not completed a complete participation in any of England's previous four series because of various injuries and the tourists' hopes of winning back the series are significantly reduced if he is absent from any of the five matches in Australia.
He has been practicing at full pace for 60 days and appeared in good condition on Wednesday, even if he could not comprehend the way in which some of his dismissals were gifted.
Will Jacks Pushes Claim
Jacks is not expected to play in the opening match – the team look to have shown their hand with the XI selected here. Still, he may have moved himself in front of the out-of-sorts Jacob Bethell with his 84, which came at almost a run a ball.
Prior to the doubt over Mark Wood, the five fast bowlers in the England XI for this match may not have been the attack for the initial match.
Carse was absent from the first day because of sickness, with his place going to Tongue. Josh Tongue had opening batsman McKinney edging to the keeper just after lunch.
Though Stokes took the scalps, Archer impressed observers. He was energetic with the new ball and once more after the interval, when he discomforted Will Jacks.
In the omission of Bashir and with Wood leaving the field, Joe Root was required to deliver fourteen overs of his off-spin. It was average performance, conceding 117 runs at an run rate of more than eight.
Root at least took a scalp in the final session when Matt Fisher somehow hit a full toss to the fielder before Archer dismissed with a bouncer Matthew Potts for fifty-three with the final ball of the day.
