Edwards and Gary O'Neil are two of the early names in the frame to succeed Vitor Pereira as manager of Wolves.
Pereira was sacked on the weekend after the team's ten-game winless start to the top-flight season.
And both candidates - both of who have historic associations to the club - are among the options to be evaluated by the Wolves leadership.
The manager is presently at Middlesbrough, which would pose a possible hurdle to his hiring at Molineux.
However the ex- Luton Town head coach - who played more than 100 of appearances for the club during his playing career - is said to be a strong contender for the vacancy.
The mid-career manager is said to have support from the Wolves board as they begin the process of hiring a new head coach.
O'Neil is additionally emerging as a surprise contender, although he would be a surprising appointment given he was released by Wolves in December last year.
The former West Ham United player is currently unemployed meaning Wolves would not need to pay any buyout fee.
