Manchester United Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side
The forward, with half a year left on her contract, is known as a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing will be seen as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League side.
Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated after she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading strikers. Per reports, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen the Attack
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a major boost to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Carrington
Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club appear to be gathering positive momentum.
Recent performances feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has seen additional activity:
- The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a senior figure stated: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the American league, added: “You can feel how much the club have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
