The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, such as the soft-colored suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."
Price's death comes shortly after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with outfits on model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in designing sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "true original," according to the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included various looks for her US tour after assuming the title.
With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.
