During the bulk of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield find themselves trapped within a psychic prison built from the past of Vecna. Their quest for a way out in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to experience a traumatic incident from Henry's childhood—an event that potentially carries the key to defeating him once and for all.

A Journey Into the Mine Shaft

After locating Max in the psychic realm known as Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a grotto that Henry is terrified of. An accidental discovery a spyglass pilfered from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the true terror lies outside of the cave. By aligning her view through the cap, she and Max suddenly fall into a deep mine shaft.

There, they witness a child version of Henry find an man who is hurt and scared. As the boy offers aid, the man reacts violently, hitting him in the hand. To protect himself, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly wonders aloud. Essentially, yes, but the act involved more than a fight for life.

An Interdimensional Incident and A Spy's Mission

*The First Shadow* opens with the 1943 event, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension later called the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who returned in a vegetative state with an entirely new blood.

This man's son, Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this experiment in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee pilfered lab samples to hand over to the Communist spies, who were keen to start their parallel research. The man in the tunnel is that employee.

Unlocking the Mystery

Based on what is revealed about his research, the container almost certainly contained some of the unique blood type. At that moment, Henry is already bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon opening the case, leading to the awakening of his powers—powers he would inadvertently transfer to the kids in Hawkins Lab.

Alternatively, the case could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to the Hawkins lab, where it maintains the stability of the mirror dimension. *The First Shadow* reveals that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, coming back hours later with a new blood type and personality. As a youth, he battles the control of a malevolent force, much like how Will was controlled by the entity in the past.

A Weaponized Emotion

Henry's enduring terror linked to that memory highlights how profoundly traumatic the incident was for him. Even as he orchestrates the army of monsters and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche still exists. Vecna uses fear, and the show is setting up a climactic battle between the monster and Will, who has deliberately faced his personal demons to fortify himself.

His confrontation has effectively disarmed Vecna. Furthermore, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, and this may grant a key upper hand in the series finale ahead.
