Tuchel Desires Bellingham's Fire So Long As The Three Lions' Star Leaves Egotism at the Door.
One snub did the trick. A second one and it could have seemed spiteful from the England manager, who is extremely shrewd not to realize that winning the World Cup demands help from the talented midfielder, even if it is also on the midfielder to blend into the game plans and squad hierarchies essential with England now that he is returned to Tuchel's supportive environment.
The manager seeks the player's competitive fire, his intensity, but it is about channeling it in the right way. Personal talent matters but England understand from past setbacks that there is consequences when celebrity takes over. Nevertheless, a message has been sent.
Bellingham had much to ponder after his omission of the recent team selection. He watched the national side qualify at next summer’s World Cup without him. He saw the young talent perform brilliantly as a high-pressing attacking midfielder. He listened as the coach talk about appreciating the team's dynamism and principles. Naturally, he has reacted in winning fashion, netting important strikes for Real Madrid versus Barcelona and Juventus. His selection was inevitable; leaving him out again would have put his tournament chances precarious.
The hope is that Tuchel will have a midfielder directed towards intimidating opponents instead of teammates. Ultimately, in purely sporting terms, there is little benefit to creating tension with a top talent in the world. The best outcome is that his period out of the team has made him realize that playing for one's country is a precious, precarious thing. Tuchel, on his side, can now throw a protective shield around the 22-year-old after demonstrating that he is unafraid to take tough decisions.
“No issue exists regarding him, there is no problem about his personality,” the German commented. “Jude just has the edge. You need a certain edge to succeed at the top that he has. We all need to support him and create an environment where he can [have] this edge in matches and towards the goals we are building as a team.”
Bellingham took up most of the attention at the team news conference for this month’s dead-rubber qualifiers against one opponent and Albania. Who else? Well, how about Phil Foden? This is a further gifted playmaker requiring support and direction. Foden has been absent for the national team since spring and has found it hard to reach his best this year but the boss could not ignore the player after how he played in Manchester City’s win versus the German side this week.
The question, however, is how to use the multiple playmakers at England’s disposal. Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze merit inclusion and there will be compelling reasons to pick Cole Palmer once he recovers from a fitness issue. Would taking multiple creators to the World Cup be an overkill? Gareth Southgate never found the correct balance at Euro 2024. He made concessions by forcing Foden and Bellingham into the starting lineup, restricting Harry Kane’s style as a result.
It is hard to see Tuchel making the same mistake if it disrupts the team harmony. There is room for one No 10, with quick attackers on the wings. Clarity is beneficial. He is selected as a central attacker. The new call-up, called up for the first time, is a central midfielder and the recalled Wharton will compete with another player as a No 6. Additionally, there is no wide role for Foden, who has to be central. Tuchel wants him near Kane. “It does not make sense to ask Phil: ‘You are needed in the team but no spot exists on your best position, could you fill in at the left side? Can you play right wing?” he said. “Phil is to feature in the advanced midfield role, through the center. I've long had this idea about him for years. In my view it suits him the most.”
Tuchel conceded there are occasions when Foden has not looked himself in an England shirt. “One senses as if, ‘Is he truly happy? And someone of his caliber who has such natural delight to play football, then clearly something is not right, be it the position, the setup, I don’t know.
“I think he is also accustomed to playing for his club in a particular setup, to have a defined role. Believe he benefits greatly from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly am I to receive the ball? When should I to accelerate the match? Where do I have to defend?
The manager mentioned one star making runs for easy finishes and the other netting strikes from 18 yards. He added he has a longlist of 60 players. Several players, others, James Trafford and the midfielder have dropped out. Nico O’Reilly is recognized for his excellent performances for City at defense. Intrigue abounds.
The omission of Ollie Watkins means there is no like-for-like alternative for Kane in the selection. Fascinatingly, he suggested using the playmaker as a false 9 against one opponent or Albania. Anthony Gordon, Marcus Rashford, the midfielder and the winger are alternatives if he be unavailable. With qualification secured, this is a moment for a little experimentation.
At the same time, it is also a chance to get Kane’s relationship with his teammate flowing. It is remarkable that you have to go back to the latter setting up the captain to net in a friendly win against the Scots in September 2023 to discover the one and only time in many appearances for the national team when the pair combined for a score. The coach will be aware that Kane and Bellingham only exchanged the ball once during England’s draws with one opponent and another at the Euros. Their partnership is lacking.
“At this point eventually it falls to the responsibility of the individuals,” he said. He does not shy away to be blunt. Remains a sense of the player having to prove himself. He may not be guaranteed to start versus Serbia and Albania. Tuchel wants Bellingham onside but he will be monitoring him closely. Set aside self-importance at the door. Doing so could turn a powerful England team into an even better one.
